Wind-blown Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) tree

Blown by winds of change, a lone iconic tree bends while rooted to the earth. Metaphorically, this image represents both the difficult challenges and the encouraging possibilities of real change.

Another aspect of this project is embodied in clusters of ‘leaves’ that appear to have blown out of the iconic sculptural ‘tree’.  These individually-crafted elements will be embedded in the sidewalk throughout the city grid as an homage to the fallen.  These leaves of remembrance draw attention, in both a performative and contemplative personal way, to the gravity and pervasiveness of the issue.

Installing Leaves of Remembrance outside Noel House/Bakhita Gardens             Installation will involve a series of ‘rolling workshops’ designed as a WPA-style public works training program.  Small teams of artist/activists will install the small leaf-like memorial plaques with names of individuals who have died while homeless throughout the City grid in the right-of-way.  Interviews with participants are being compiled as part of sound collage for a series of podcasts and broadcasts.
